Storyline (Macmillan, 1997) A collection of short stories suitable for junior school. My favourites are Killer and Watermelons - the first because of its surprise structure; the second because it's a good story for boys to talk about.

Model Writing (Heinemann, Port Melbourne, 1988) A writing book based on providing models. Each sample begins with a brief introduction suggesting elements to look for; there are questions and activities at the end. Examining the way good writers write is still my favourite way of teaching writing.
Philip Gardner English Extra
(Heinemann, Port Melbourne, 1990)
An amalgamation of Crosschecks and a new title - aimed at the "extras" class where you needed something quick and structured.
Philip Gardner Crosschecks 1 & 2
(Heinemann Educational Australia, Richmond, 1988)
Subtitled "Making Sense of Spelling and Punctuation". Originally put together as spelling books, they contain lists of words that, for the most part, demonstrate an aspect of spelling. The punctuation exercises were added to give the units a little more meat. The advantage of the crosswords is that all clues are dictionary definitions - so if students don't know an answer, they can just look up the words in the list and match the dictionary definitions with the crossword clues.
